Boxing By The Waterfront

Dateline: January 14, 2010

Boxing by the Waterfront is the Jamaica Boxing Board of Control’s (JBBC’s) first event card on the 2010 boxing calendar and it is promising to be something spectacular! The Boxing Board has teamed up with Pier 1 in Montego Bay to put on what is touted to be a “Las Vegas style” boxing card complete with ringside entertainment and ring girls. The card, which is expected to be the first of a number of Pro-Am cards slated for 2010, will see two professional and six amateur fights being contested during the event.

2009’s Most Outstanding Boxer winner Sakima Mullings from the Bruising Gym will make his professional debut when he takes on Glenroy “Bumpy” Beckford of the Hard Knocks Gym in Westmoreland. At a press conference held on Thursday, January 14 at the Hilton Kingston Hotel to announce his transition from amateur to professional, Mullings thanked God for a great year in 2009, and offered his prayers and condolences to the victims of the Haitian earthquake tragedy. He expressed confidence in his preparation for the fight and stated that he looking forward to great things in 2010.

Pier 1’s Robin Russell emphasised the quality event that will be put on for the boxing enthusiasts and is encouraging everyone to come out. Professional stage and lighting, ring girls and VIP area are just some of the attractions that were mentioned to whet the appetites of the undecided. The card is set to start at 8:00 pm and the fun continues even after the close of the last fight. “The event will have a distinct Las Vegas Flavour, and will go on till you say when” said Russell. He also announced that during the event, a special collection will be taken for the victims of the Haitian tragedy, and that a part of the proceeds from the gate will also be going to the Haitian Relief Fund.

Stephen “Bomber” Jones, First Vice President of the JBBC, read a message from JBBC President William Tavares-Finson who was unable to attend the press conference, expressing his condolences for the people of Haiti, and pledging the support of the JBBC to the relief effort. Jones went on to say that this event would be the first in a series of fight cards that would lead to the selection of the Jamaica National Squad.
