August 19, 2011 The Path Has Been SetAs a fiercely competitive people, Jamaica has managed to impact the world in many arenas. Jamaica's record of producing fine athletes extends to the boxing ring. Today, even in 2011, if you mention the names Richard Shrimpy Clark, Michael McCallum, or Trevor Berbick, nearly every Jamaican young or old knows of them and could hazard a guess at their accomplishments. No doubt it was difficult for these fighters and for those who went before them to break out of the local into the international but now that it has been done, one expects that the great ones that follow should be able to do the same. The Work Has Been Put InFor his part, Nicholas Walters comes from a fighting family. His father is veteran boxer, Job Walters. No doubt Nicholas had the advantage of observing boxing up close from an early age, taking in the ring action, the behind the scenes efforts as well as the business side of the sport. Being able to spar with his brother Oshane didn't hurt either. As an amateur, Nicholas racked up the wins ending his amateur career in 2007 with an enviable record of 49-11. He also copped a gold medal at the Caribbean Games and a bronze medal at the Central American Games. Since turning pro, Walters is based in Panama has also been training in Florida. He takes his fitness very seriously and his sparring partners will tell you that this fighter is trying to knock you out from the get-go. He loves boxing and it shows in his performance. The Record Stands To ShowIn 2009, he entered the WBA rankings when he won the WBA Fedelatin title. Before his June 16 fight, Walters was the WBA #6, IBF #9 and WBO #11 ranked featherweight in the world. Walters remains undefeated in 18 fights having fought 73 rounds overall with a professional record of 18 wins, no defeats and no draws. 15 wins came by way of knockout. That’s an 83.33% knockout rate. The Stage Is SetSo, at 25, this very Jamaican young boxing sensation now stands perched on the edge of greatness.
