Leroy Brown, the General Secretary of the Jamaica Boxing Board of Control (JBBC), is now among the second highest boxing officials in the world. Brown was licensed by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) to join the international technical official (ITO) panel. His appointment makes his the 44th ITO official in the world and the 14th in the Americas region. “What is happening now is that with AIBA, everybody has to pass qualifying exams now, so to keep myself in loop I had to do the exam, which I did in Panama on July 2. I was able to get through and I’m now what they call (an) ITO. In boxing, there is always something else to learn, another ladder to climb, something else to achieve (and) this to me, was just another achievement that I set out to get at, and I got the achievement,” Brown told RJR Sports. More J’can boxing officials can make ITO panel – Brown His achievement represents a first for an English speaking Caribbean boxing official and means Brown can now officiate in all international boxing tournaments worldwide. And according to him, more officials in Jamaica are capable of following his footstep and he is ready to help them along the way. “I would say there are about three of four people who I see on the horizon now, who can move forward to the top and my job now is to encourage them and whatever sort of assistance I can give technical wise to pass it on to them. Because you want to leave a legacy, you want people to succeed you, so one of my goals at this time is to have people who stand in and fill my shoes at a later stage,” Brown stated. The achievement represents a first for an English speaking Caribbean boxing official and means Brown can now officiate in all international boxing tournaments worldwide. The long serving boxing official was also the first Jamaican to qualify as an AIBA international judge. Brown has officiated as international boxing judge at the Olympic Games, the IAAF World Championships, the Commonwealth Games and the Pan American Games. Boxing Fraternity: I have taken the opportunity to pass on to you a bit of correspondence from Al Hamilton our liason in London with respect to the passing of Sir Henry Cooper. I found the historical aspect of his note, however, very interesting and thought you may too. William Tavares-Finson On May 2, 2011 Al Hamilton wrote: "I think it is appropriate for you, on behalf of the "Board" to send condolences, to the family of the late Sir Henry Cooper, through the CBC! Cooper was perhaps the most popular British pugilist of his generation. His links with Jamaica, came through defeating our own Joe Bygraves, for the "Empire" title in the late fifties. At that time, non British were excluded from contesting for that title, which later became the "Commonwealth" title. Click here to view previous news itemsLatest International Boxing News
